I got a new cable and it works. I already had debugging enabled so it connected first thing. Disabled and it wasn't connecting, kept flashing connected as charging then disappearing. So then I reenabled debugging and selected connect as midi for USB options. It still connects as charging but now I can disable debugging and Android auto works.
Not to be confused with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, the built-in navigation system does not require the use of any mobile phone device.
