I got a new cable and it works. I already had debugging enabled so it connected first thing. Disabled and it wasn't connecting, kept flashing connected as charging then disappearing. So then I reenabled debugging and selected connect as midi for USB options. It still connects as charging but now I can disable debugging and Android auto works. When I leave my phone plugged in and turn the car off and then restart the car, I have to unplug and plug phone back in so that the car recognizes it and offers Android Auto as an option. Edit - this seems to be expected behavior (or a known issue). Solution is to disconnect the watch from the phone while using Android Auto.
