For example, while not a perfect comparison using a torus to get an idea, a 26" tire that is just .3" wider than a 27.5" tire will be significantly bigger with more volume. 27.5" with a major radius of 14 and minor of 2.25 has a volume of 1399. 26" with a major radius of 13.5 and minor of 2.4 has a volume of 1535.
Highlights. Built on a lightweight ALUXX aluminum frame that features classic hardtail design and the balanced riding characteristics of either larger diameter 29-inch or 27.5-inch wheels, Talon is a great choice for XC and trail riding. The frame geometry is specifically designed to adapt to its respective wheel size and either an 80mm or
The difference between them really is minute until you are into technical terrain and tight track if you were measuring by identical tire widths on same bike. The 27.5 will have a marginal strength improvement and is slightly more maneuverable in tight quarters than the 29er but I ride a 29er just fine in these situations.
It also appears that it is not the case that we simply divide the heights and say that cyclists below 175 cm (5′ 9″) are better served by 26″ (or 27.5″) bikes, whereas cyclists above 5′ 9″ are better served by 29″ bikes. I am not soliciting ideas for determining whether a 26, 27.5, or 29 bike is more suitable for a given rider.
Both are great for their own purposes. Certainly the 3" tires are faster rolling than the chonky 4.8" and still great for occasional sand. 27.5-plus (2.8-3.5") would certainly be faster than a true fat tire but make sure it doesn't drop your frame too low. You can look up the total wheel diameter here to compare.
The most pronounced difference was found on asphalt and gravel (harder surfaces) at lower tyre pressures. Powering the 26-inch wheel uphill at 20km/h on asphalt required 214.3-watts while the 29er only took 206.4-watts. That’s 7.9-watts less energy loss in the 29er—approximately 4% difference.
The 27.5” wheel size literally cuts the difference between the 29er and 26 wheel size of the past. The original idea with 27.5” wheels was to gain some of the benefits of the 29er with some of the benefits we used to get from 26” wheels on older bikes.
Winner – 26er. Borrowing a bit from the point above, saving weight on your Mountain Bike comes with loads more benefits. The lighter weight 26er will is going to be the clear winner for this category. Since 29ers are heavier than 26ers, a 26er is going to be a lot nimbler and more maneuverable than the 29er.
